insitu.reviews seeks to find out how design belongs. The home – as a collection of objects, curated cumulatively over years and decades– can be read as an intimate character portrait of the inhabitant. Pieces big and small fit together to form an intricate, delicately balanced whole. What happens when a foreign object is imposed on this space?
insitu.reviews forces design objects and furniture of all guises into homes for an unbiased and candid review. The first three episodes taking place in Milanese homes.
insitu.reviews was born to Gavin Youngs and Alessandro Bonavita post the delirious design feast of the Salone del Mobile Milano. The idea – a seemingly random design object appears in a home without context, without known author, without explanation: to simply be lived with and experienced. Outside of the usual contextual framework, design is forced to speak for itself… and be spoken-to. A disruption to the conventional design review.
The first three films evolved organically collecting three distinct Milanese voices – Carla Vanni (Grazia Fashion Editor), Teresa Esposti (Psychologist) and Pupi Solari (Entrepreneur). Each reviewer judges a work from designers Germans Ermičs, Formafantasma and Productora.
In each film, the distinct candour and personality of the reviewer frames design objects in a new light, resulting in a delightfully prismatic dance between character, design and the film-makers.
